Saree Care Tips: Keep Your Saree Soft Forever

Saree Care Tips: Keep Your Saree Soft Forever

That fresh-from-loom softness shouldn’t fade after one wear. Rong Suta sarees are artisan-made to last generations, but only if you treat them right.

Here’s your no-nonsense guide to washing, storing, and reviving handloom magic — so your drape stays cloud-soft for years.

Washing Without the Drama

Step 1: Handwash separately in cold water with salt and/or a mild soap (baby shampoo works). Don’t soak it for more than 5 minutes, and swirl gently for 2 minutes max.      Step 2: No wringing ever. Hang flat on wire/wide hanger to drain — Let excess water drip naturally (10-15 mins).                                                                                                  Step 3: Flat dry in partial shade (not direct sun for colors).

Pro tip: Wide plastic hangers work best — distributes weight evenly, no stretch marks on pallu.                                                                                                                                        Test dark shades separately.

Storage That Actually Works

Cotton muslin bags > plastic. Air circulation = no musty smells.
No wire hangers. Fold loosely with naphthalene balls.
Every 2 months: Sun exposure — lay flat in morning sun (8-10 AM) 30 mins to kill moisture/mold.

Pro tip: Roll instead of fold. Cedar blocks for drawers.

Quick Fixes + Moisture Control

Wrinkles: For everyday creases, use a medium-heat iron or a steam iron on the reverse side of the saree.                                                                                                                Musty smell: Sun-dry inside out (morning light only, 30 mins max).
Stains: Dab glycerin + cold water.                                                                              Moisture hack: Post-monsoon, give sarees 1 hr morning sun monthly. Prevents yellowing.
